9. John Andre
John Andre was a spy and British officer during the American war of independence. He assisted Benedict Arnold’s attempt to surrender the West Point fort to the British forces when he was a major in British’s intelligence service. Arnold’s wife, Peggy Shippen was a loyalist and she was one of Andre’s most important sources. Arnold finally agreed to relinquish control of West Point fort £20,000, a move that allowed British forces to isolate New England from other rebellious colonies.
