5. Milo of Croton

Milo of Croton was a famous wrestler from the ancient city of Croton in southern Italy. He won many important athletic festivals in ancient Greece and enjoyed a successful wrestling career. An ancient commentator, Diodorus Siculus, also credited him for leading the militia army of his city against the neighboring city of Sybaris in 510 BC. The date of his death is unknown, but legend says that Milo tried to test his strength by rending a tree-trunk with his bare hands. Unfortunately, the wedges fell and his hands were trapped in the cleft of the trunk and a pack of wolves came to devour him.
