8. Gunther Plüschow


When the First World War broke, Gunther Plüschow was stationed as an airman in Tsingtau, a German colony. After escaping from the besieged colony by air; he used proper travel document to return to Europe. Unfortunately, the ship transited at Gibraltar and he was detained by the local British authority.

During a transfer to the POW camp in Leicestershire, Plüschow escaped and hid at the British Museum in London. He had lucky encounter with a friend and obtained information about a ferry that would depart for the neutral Holland. When he reached Germany, Plüschow was promoted, decorated and acclaimed as the “Hero from Tsingtau” Gunther Plüschow survived the war and considered a hero by the Argentinean people for his aerial explorations.
