2. Rio de Janeiro Floods
A sequence of mudslides and floods occurred in various towns of Rio de Janeiro in January 2011. The cities that testified casualties are sited in a mountainous region of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The floods rendered 23000 homeless and caused almost 903 deaths. The media claims that the floods in Rio de Janeiro were the worst natural disaster in the history of Brazil, thus making it the ninth disaster in the list of top natural disasters in the year 2011.
