3. Fergana Valley
The tragedy happened in Uzbekistan in 1992. The area is the most active oil-refining areas in the country. The government tried to mellow down the accident by not letting the media take much notice of the problem. As this might be the case, later on it was found out that the accident was the worst in-land oil spill ever recorded.
