9. Po’ Boy
This is true New Orleans cuisine. These famous subs came around when the owners of a coffee shop were trying to feed striking street car drivers and conductors. One of the owners was quoted saying: “We fed those men free of charge until the strike ended. Whenever we saw one of the striking men coming, one of us would say, ‘Here comes another poor boy.’” And that’s where the name comes from.
They’re different to normal subs because they are made with French bread, which is known for its fluffy centre. It’s then filled with either meat or fried seafood.
