Hervey Bay is known as the home of the Humpbacks. The best time to watch whales here are between July and November. During this time humpback whales springboard above the water in a beautiful display. Humpbacks often grow to be over 50 feet long with almost 50 tons of weight on them. They are gentle and curious and will sometimes approach boats. These whales feed only in the summer and mate and birth in winter living off reserves of fat.
