Palmenhaus
Paradise under the palms

One of the most spectacular locations in Vienna. The Jugendstil imperial palm house has been masterfully renovated by architects Eichinger oder Knechtl. The imposing sun-filled glass conservatory filled with giant palms is now a multifaceted locale. The Palmenhaus serves as a cafe, a gourmet restaurant and a cocktail bar with DJs. The mezzanine platform works as a catwalk or as a private dining room, and the outdoor dining space can seat up to 500 people.

When dining on the terrace overlooking the Burggarten (the Habsburg emperor’s private garden) many a well-traveled Viennese declare that the city has finally become a Weltstadt, a sophisticated metropolis. In the summer, the deck chairs also line the terrace and garden and once a week there is a barbecue. On warm weekends or during special events, the service threatens to collapse. Pity. Matthias Zykan’s cooking gets better from year to year. The seafood here is highly recommended. Other highlights of the menu are their surprisingly comprehensive wine and cheese selections.
