Even if buying a new pet while on holiday isn’t ranked high on your to-do list (nevermind the customs paperwork), this market is worth a look before it slips onto the radar of animal rights organizations. We don’t condone what we see, only urge you to see it too. The stores are a bit too cramped together for our fur and feathered friends—the caged kittens and hamsters are probably not the happiest-looking around. But we think it’s a good idea to pay them a visit and share a little love; and don’t forget the insects.
The market is abuzz with a hive of activity—squeaks and squawks sounding over a constant cricket drone (check the tiny straw baskets)—with hawkers selling animals and paraphernalia of all variety, from aquatic plants for your fish tank to rabbits to star tortoises too; potentially through illegal trade. Oh the excitement!
