Apple Store (Covent Garden) Mactastic

The opening of the Covent Garden branch has seen Londoners breathe a giant sigh of relief. Gone now is the need to battle with the Oxford Street hoards to make your Genius Bar appointment on time. You can arrive in style having battled only the Covent Garden crowds instead…

Apple has taken over an enormous plot in the Piazza – they spent millions to restore to its former glory and it really shows. The open brickwork, large windows and the sky high ceilings give the venue a sleek ‘Apple’ atmosphere to what is otherwise a very traditional edifice. The Holy Grail for computer geeks the world over, this is one of the best Apple stores the world over.

Tatty Devine Brick Lane A modern classic

Laser cut jewellery has infiltrated every shop on the high street. But trace it back to its roots and you’ll find yourself at a small little shop on Brick Lane. As one of the first shops to set up camp in the area, Rosie Wolfenden and Harriet Vine (aka Tatty Devine) are trendsetters in every sense of the word.

In a sea of laser cut jewellery it is testament to the brand that it still markedly stands out from its competition – coming up with iconic cult classics, witty trinkets and collaborations for and with some of the biggest creative names in the business (Gilbert and George and Rob Ryan for instance). It’s wearable art a cut above the rest.

Mr Start Suits to last a lifetime

Saville Row beware, there’s a new contender on the block. Meet Mr. Start. It’s the third to bear the Start name and this one gives the limelight to the suit. Located on Rivington Street, next to its two sister stores, the interior reeks of stylish luxury with an industrial edge (not unlike the suits themselves).

Bespoke tailoring in Shoreditch? Perhaps not what you’d expect, but don’t let that lower your expectations – they spare no expense in terms of service and deliver a quality product every time. And it certainly means there’s now no excuse not to look your best – from tailor-made to off the peg there’s something to suit everyone.

Aimé French chic from head to toe

This lovely boutique on Ledbury Road will make the heart of every respectable Francophile jump like mad upon arrival. Sporting a beautifully decorated lounge feel, the staff are friendly and present without stumbling into pushy territory. And as the main UK stockist of APC, APC Madras and Isabel Marant, they have a hot selection of both men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and jewellery. Other (more affordable) brands include Les Prairies de Paris, Forte Forte, Madame a Paris, Iro, and Repetto – all of which can be found on the spacious lower floor.

Upstairs lives a spread of finely-crafted homeware, alongside kitschier picnic accessories, luxurious glassware and ceramics from LSA and La Rochere, as well as Aimé’s own range of scented candles. And pop just next door to discover Petit Aimé, a slightly smaller store dedicated entirely to les petits filous. The owners modestly describe their little emporium as the last word in just about everything French. And they’re not far off the mark.

HUH. Store The online mag goes physical

Originally a humble black and white print-run in a small university bedroom back in 2008, HUH. has since become something of an online cult icon, with a reputation for covering an eclectic mix of music, fashion, film and design. And now this, their clothing and accessories store in Dalston, brings the best aspects of their site back into the real world. Why it’s almost ironic.

Showing off their astute fashion aesthetic, the svelte stripped-wood retail space stocks men’s and women’s labels like Orlebar Brown, Happy Socks, Pointer, Swedish Hasbeens and Herschel, as well as an array of covetable publications by Gestalten and quirkier design pieces like Boskke sky planters. While you’re browsing the rails and shelves, spare a moment to take in playlists (co-compiled by HUH. readers) and a perfectly prepped coffee (from Exmouth Market’s Caravan) at the on-site coffee bar.

F-Troupe A step back in time

Hopefully the first of many, this is the first eponymous store for the shoe brand F-Troupe. Carefully selected Victorian paraphernalia fills the shop’s interior and demonstrates the inspiration behind the collection. The result feels more like a Dikensian curiosity shop than an actual shoe shop but that’s part of its appeal. The window front is filled with large Victorian Carboys filled with coloured water, images of circus sideshow acts take pride of place on the walls and it’s uncertain whether the next bell jar will contain shoes or in fact a taxidermy creature. The collection is equally as eccentric, eclectic and imaginative but with a quality of design and at an affordable price to boot.

Sunspel Classic design are always timeless featured

Interesting fact of the day – it’s thanks to Sunspel that boys have the boxers shorts they know (and love) today. So where better to buy them then at the point of origin?

This is a brand that’s here to stay. It’s been around for over 150 years to date and now with its own retail space in Shoreditch, the forecast looks good. Their Riviera polo shirt is iconic for its appearance atop Daniel Craig in Casino Royale but they’ve also now expanded to include a women’s range – it keeps to the same principle of good quality, long lasting basics that are well designed and tailored.
