In the shadow of the St. Matthias Kirche, this beloved Schöneberg mainstay is a magnet for food-fanatics, locals and soon to be enamored chancers who happen upon the bustling weekly market.
A trip here can initially be daunting in the face of such bountiful variety, but there’s joy to be had in wandering, so be sure to nibble on a few things before stocking up your own kitchen with your choice from the astonishing array of cheeses, jams, honeys, meats and abundance of colorful produce.
It’s a great place to do lunch, with Thai soups and stir-fried dishes more flavorful and spicier than those found in Asian restaurants around the city, and a Pelmeni stand with juicy dumplings in broth with dill, sour cream and hot sauce. If your palette prefers something else, there’s also smoked fish to be had on the Eastern end near the church, and some of the tastiest lamb sausage in town by the main entrance.
Once you’re full enough to be discerning in your purchases, rest assured you’ll be taking home some of the best Berlin has to offer. But proceed with caution: there’s little to stop you from going overboard at this Berlin smorgasbord.
