If you go down to the woods today...

Sprawling across 3,000 hectares west of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, this jolly green giant of a forest is the largest area of green in Berlin’s city limits—what better excuse to fill a few backpacks with beers and disappear in amongst the boughs for a day?

Assuming those backpacks don’t get too light too quickly, Grunewald’s sheltered paths have more than a few secrets to divulge to those intrepid enough to do a little serious seeking. And serious seeking used to be the name of the game at the abandoned U.S listening station atop of Teufelsberg; Berlin’s highest peak, built out of rubble and wreckage from the second world war. If the climb and those beers have taken their toll, you can bathe those aching limbs (and heads) in lake Teufelsee—just watch out for the nudists.
