Judging by the hordes of drunk tourist that block the city’s bicycle paths, some still believe in the persistent stereotypes that Amsterdam is all about marijuana, the red light district, tulips and Heineken. You’d almost forget that Amsterdam has the largest preserved city center in the world.

For those interested in the more illustrious side of the city, the Museum Willet-Holthuysen is certainly worth a visit. This old canal house museum (the only one open to the public) elegantly reveals the mysteries that lie behind the majestic facade, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of the 17th century’s happy few.

When Miss Willet-Holthuysen passed away in 1895, she left the house (all her household effects and extensive art collection included) to the city of Amsterdam. Wandering through the beautifully decorated bedrooms, kitchens and ballroom makes you wish she was still around to give you her personal tour.
