When Is In-Patient Therapy Needed

2 Mins read

Mental health retreats for women and facilities that specialize in prescription drug rehab are often looked at as “in-patient” facilities. In-patient treatment programs are available for clients who have been addicted for long periods of time or for those who are emotionally unstable and have a difficult time accounting for their own behavior.
When Is In-Patient Therapy Needed

Evaluating the Level of Addiction

When a client is considered for any type of rehab or counseling, they must go through an extensive evaluation by trained professionals who have years of experience with addiction and the behaviors it can cause. Anxiety treatment centers, bipolar disorder treatment centers and trauma treatment facilities are capable of handling even the most severe cases of addiction.
When the level of addiction is to the point where the client can no longer be held responsible for his or her own health, an in-patient treatment program is considered. In-patient treatment provides 24-hour, round the clock care that enables the staff to constantly monitor the behavior and actions of the person being treated.

Intake Counselors look for several different signs or clues that will determine the severity of the client’s disorder or disease. These indicators will be rated by how noticeable they are and whether or not the client is aware of them. A few of these signs and symptoms include:

  • Self harming
  • Forgetting to eat, bathe or change clothes
  • Emotional outbursts for no apparent cause
  • Unrealistic thoughts or expectations
  • Deep depression
  • Frequent anxiety attacks

In-patient treatment programs call for the constant supervision of the client. This is extremely important if they have started to harm themselves or begin to entertain thoughts of suicide. Clients who have reached this point often need constant assurance of their own personal self worth. They may be feeling as if they are worthless or that their situation is hopeless. Inpatient treatment monitors those behaviors and allows counselors to interact with the client during the most stressful times. The issue can be addressed when it occurs instead of hours or days later at an out-patient session. Treatment is immediate and ongoing.

Tough Love

Clients who are placed in inpatient treatment are constantly monitored. They cannot leave and they must abide by the rules of the facility. Positive behaviors are rewarded, while negative behaviors can result in the loss of privileges. Clients are treated with respect and shown compassion at all levels of their treatment plan. There will be times when the client is upset or angry because they cannot have what they want. Counselors are there to help them overcome their addiction not satisfy their cravings that put them there in the first place. Although the treatment may seem to be unfair at times, breaking the cycle of addiction is not an easy task but must be completed if the client is going to recover.

When you or a loved one realize inpatient therapy may be the best route for the illness or addiction, please seek treatment at your nearest physician-endorsed residential rehabilitation program like Sovereign Health.
