Web Design Basics

2 Mins read

The first thing we should do is to define the objectives and purposes of our website. We should focus on what our websites should achieve. Websites can be used as personal or business profiles. In this case, we need to understand the tastes and needs of our audience. The design of our websites should be at the forefront of our mind. We could take a look at websites of competitors to help us gain a few ideas on what works and what won’t. Good web design should help people navigate our content easily. In this case, we should make sure that the main sections of our website should be easy to navigate and highly visible. It is preferable to invite people to as many as webpages as we want. There are many ways to make it much easier for us to find each page. In this case, we should visualize the structure of our website, so we can create the flow chart on how to design a good website. We should think about how users could use the information within our website, so they can find any information very easily. In this case, we should keep the information on the first page concise and brief.

In this case, we shouldn’t bog down users initially with too much information. The main page should be clean and easy to use. General information should be interesting to read and encourage people to find more about our topic by navigating to specific webpages that contain more detailed information. In this case, we could follow the common convention in website. A webpage structure is usually consisted of footer, header and upper horizontal navigation. There could also be a vertical menu on the left side of the page to help people find specific pages easily. A website is typically consisted of many contents, especially if it is already maintained for more than a few years. In this case, we may need to use more than a few dozen pages, so people don’t have to digest too much information. In general, we should keep things simple and it is important to make sure that we use correct grammar. We should check everything again, so they could look more professional. Text can be more difficult to read if we use unusual fonts, so we should ensure higher readability.

In this case, we still stick to two or three common fonts. For example, people could find basic San Serif variants much easier to read on the monitors. Text should be large enough, so people can smoothly read the text without extra physical efforts, such as squinting or leaning forward. It is also a good idea to break up text with lists and bullet points to improve comprehension. Even if we are using sophisticated website engines, such as WordPress and Blogger; it is still a good idea to learn more about HTML. It is possible to use common WYSIWYG interface used by web engines, but basic HTML knowledge could offer a lot more flexibility.
