Ian Kevin Curtis was the songwriter and the leader of a post-punk band, Joy Division, which was established in Manchester at 1977. Curtis grew up in Hurdsfield and attended the King’s School. Although Joy Division had a limited commercial success, it influenced many musicians and is considered today as the pioneer of the Gothic genre. Curtis is known for his suicidal and depressive lyrics as well as deep voice. His stage performance was often characterized convulsive dancing. Additionally, he suffered from a mild degree of agoraphobia and epilepsy. During the celebration for the band’s upcoming tour to the United States, Curtis went home quietly, where he hung himself. He died at 23.
