8. Cotard’s Syndrome
People with Cotard’s Syndrome or Walking Corpse Syndrome believe that they are dead, putrefying and eventually no longer exist. Sufferers often become withdrawn from other people and they always neglect their own well-being and hygiene. The highly distorted view of the world prevents them from making sense of reality and when experiencing depressive moods, sufferers become psychosomatically paralyzed to simulate death and rigor mortis. They don’t necessarily have hallucinations, but their strong delusions are similar to those found in people with schizophrenia.
