9. Burke and Hare
Burke and Hare murders or the West Port murders were perpetrated by William Burke and William Hare. In 19th century, the Edinburgh Medical College was widely recognized for researches in medical sciences. A huge influx of new students, caused a surge of demand for cadavers. Executed criminals were the only legal source of bodies, but the number of executions declines sharply after changes in law. Burke and Hare killed 17 people in a murder spree that lasted for about one year. Burke was hanged and his body was dissected in the Edinburgh Medical College for educational purpose. Hare was released years later and rumored to die in lime pit as a blind beggar.
