9. Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
A magnitude of 7.3 earthquake struck Ashgabat during waking hours. Ashgabat was seriously damaged including its neighboring villages. Concrete buildings and vehicles were destroyed and surface rupture has been observed all throughout the area. Initial report says that the death toll was 10,000 but the actual death toll reached 110,000.
