The only active volcano to have erupted in the last century in the European region, mount Vesuvius is mostly known for its eruption in 79 AD when it destroyed the Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The last eruption in the volcano was in 1944 when the lava fountains spewed by the mountain reached a height of 1000m.
