Cuttack – The Commercial Centre Of Orissa, A Historic City, and A Popular Tourist Destination

Cuttack is one of the most significant cities in the south-eastern part of India. It is the former capital and the second largest city in the state of Orissa. It acts as the headquarters of the district of Cuttack. It is also an important judicial centre as the Odissa High Court is situated here. Fondly called the Silver City for the fact that it has more than 1000 years old tradition of producing silver filigree work, the city is also one of the oldest commercial cities of significance. In fact, it the is commercial capital of the state, home to a large number of of businesses and trade houses. The city is also just often called the “Twin city of Bhubaneshwar”, situated to the north of Bhubaneswar at a distance of about 27 k.m. Today, it is a bustling city with busy and noisy market and hosting some of the old monumental places and several highly revered temples. The city in particular is known for the old Barabati Fort which was the base of the development of initial Cuttack city.

Cuttack, being the most significant commercial hub of the state, shares excellent air, rail, and road connectivity to rest of the nation. The Charbatia Air Base is located very close to the city centre but it is reserved for the exclusive use by Indian Air Force. Biju Patnaik Airport located in Bhubaneswar at a distance of 28 k.m. is the closest commercial airport with a large frequency of flights serving it on daily basis. The Cuttack Junction is one of the main railway station on the Chennai-Howrah railway line and is equipped with a large number of hotels in Cuttack to provide satisfactory lodging to the visitors. It links to all part of India through a large fleet of trains that serve the railway station on a regular basis and is a part of East Coast Railway of India.

One of the most highlighted attributes of the city is that it is a major hub of sports. The Barabati Sports Complex, one of the largest and state-of-art sports complexes in the country, is situated here. The stadium contained inside the complex is an important venue for football and international cricket matches. There also exists a modern indoor hall called Sachin Tendulkar Indoor Hall and evidently is a token of respect to the cricketing legend. Additionally, the complex also features facilities like Swimming, Basketball, Lawn Tennis, Volleyball, etc. The place is quite popular amongst the tourists and is now also used as a major sightseeing spots in the city.

Additionally, there are a couple of places that are simply worth visiting. They include: Cuttack Chandi Temple, Qadam Rasul, Dhabaleswar temple, Holy Rosary Church, Freedom Fighter Memorial, Maritime Museum, and Deer Park. The city is also popular for the Bhawan Bazar Tepan Gali meaning 52 markets and 53 lanes and is one of the hottest places to shop and see the city in action. It is a major shopping area with commodities ranging from anything to everything. There also exist some good 3 Star hotels in Cuttack located in the area and are often picked by the tourists.
