Sam Ruben was an American scientist who was recruited for wartime effort in the Second World War. During a research, he studied the potential of phosgene gas as a chemical weapon. He and colleagues studied how phosgene reacts with protein extracted from human long. In September 1943, Ruben died after a laboratory accident exposed him to a lethal dose of phosgene gas. Allied never used the phosgene in war, but Japan deployed significantly during the war in China.
