This started out as a Radio Series for the BBC and was soon turned into five books, published between 1979 and 1992. It follows the adventures of Arthur Dent, an Englishman and a number of other characters including an alien who named himself Ford Prefect after the car, as he thought automobiles were the dominant race on Earth.
