2. Rebecca – Daphne du Maurier

This is the tale of an innocent bride who finds her life blighted by the suspicious death of her husband’s first wife. The novel opens with the famous line “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” The reader is then transported into the world of Mrs de Winter who reflects on her marriage to a husband she barely knew.

In every corner of the house she now lives in are phantoms of her new husband’s previous wife. The sinister housekeeper has also preserved a number of rooms including clothing laid out ready to be worn, but not by any of the house’s current occupants.
