3. Minotaur

This is a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man. He dwelt at the centre of a Labyrinth that was created by Daedalus and his Son Icarus on the command of King Minos of Crete. To appease the Minotaur, sacrifices were sent into the maze. Seven unwed girls and seven young men were sent every seventh or ninth year.

When the third sacrifice approached, Theseus volunteered to slay the monster. He promised his father he would put up white sails when he returned home if he’d been successful. If not his crew would leave up the black sails.

Theseus made it through the maze with the help of a ball of string and killed the Minotaur. However, as he had two women vying for his love he was distracted and neglected to put up the white sail. As his father saw the black sail approach he thought his son dead and committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea.
