1. Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X
Francis Bacon created a distorted version of the popular painting of the Pope Innocent X. Bacon claimed that he had nothing against the Pope but he was compelled to revisit the subject regularly. Unlike the original, Bacon’s painting uses darker colors that lend a nightmarish and grotesque tone.
