6. The Doll


Hans Bellmer started his doll project as a response to the rise of Nazism in Germany to declare that he wouldn’t work to support the new fascism government. He offered satirical view of perfect race and physical body concepts then prominent in Germany. Made from plaster, glue and flax fiber, his first dolls were produced in Berlin. During his next projects, Bellmer used hollow limbs with wooden ball joints for the knees and hips.
