Tyson was a student at the Lafayette Senior Institute, where he began his career as a 100m sprinter, winning numerous state titles. In 2004, at the University of Arkansas, he won the 100m event in the outdoors University Championship with 10.06 s. In 2005, he shifted to 200m dash and set a personal record of 19.93 s. At the 2005 Athletics World Championship in Helsinki he finished the 200m event at 4th place. Finally, in the 2008 US Olympic trials he recorded a wind-assisted running time of 9.69 s.
