Top 10 Facts About The Earth

3. Moon is Slowly Going Away

The Moon rotates around the Earth in its orbit but each year, it is moving away from the Earth by about 1.6 inches or 4 centimeters. The reason for this moving away is the tides. The gravity of the moon pulls at the Earth’s crust distorting it by a few centimeters. The rotation of the moon is faster than its orbit which results in the bulge of the Earth pulling the moon out of its orbit.
