Styling Tips for Every Body Type: Look Your Best Every Day

4 Mins read

Listen. We’re all about wearing whatever you want, and clothes are meant to fit your body, not the other way around. But like finding the perfect bra, finding clothes that fit right and have you looking your best can also lead to feeling your best.

We’re not here to make the rules; we’re here to merely make suggestions. We firmly believe that any style of clothing can work with you, no matter what your body type is, as long as you know some key tips. To help you wear what you want but also feel comfortable and confident, here are our fashion tips.

Understanding Your Body Type

Hey, we’re not here to say some clothes are specific for certain body types, because that’s a load of bologna. Instead, we believe that knowledge is power, and knowing your body type can help you easily find the right measurements so you can feel good in any style

Here are some basic body types you’re most likely to see:

Hourglass

The hourglass shape features a bust and hips that come out at a similar width, with the waist being the smallest measurement.

Pear

The pear shape is described as the hips being the widest part of the body compared to the bust and shoulders.

Apple:

The apple shape is adorned with a wider bust and shoulders and a smaller waist and hip area.

Rectangle

The rectangle shape is considered the ‘athletic’ of the bunch and features an aligned bust, waist, and hips with minimal curves down the body.

Inverted Triangle

As the name implies, the inverted triangle is identified by broader shoulders compared to the hips.

Styling tips

Now that you have an idea of what you’re working with, here are our tips for styling outfits to fit your body so you feel your best.

Hourglass Body Shape

To accentuate your natural figure, opt for clothing that emphasizes your waist, such as fitted dresses or tops paired with belts. Wrap dresses and peplum tops are excellent choices as they cinch at the waist, enhancing your silhouette. When choosing bottoms, A-line skirts or high-waisted pants can maintain balance between your upper and lower body.

Avoid styles that hide your curves, like overly boxy or shapeless clothing. Instead, opt for tailored pieces that follow the contours of your body without being too tight. V-neck or scoop necklines can elongate your torso and draw attention to your décolletage. Fabrics like jersey, silk, or lightweight wool that drape well can further accentuate your curves and create a flattering silhouette.

Pear Body Shape

With the pear, your curves do all the talking. Bright colors, patterns, or embellishments on tops can help create visual interest and draw the eye upwards. Off-the-shoulder or boatneck tops can also emphasize your shoulders to create a balanced look.

Pear bodies rock a-line skirts or dresses that flare out gently from the waist. Maxi skirts can also elongate your lower body while offering comfort and style. Structured shoulders, such as tops with puff sleeves or details like ruffles, can add volume to your upper body, creating a more balanced appearance. Dark-coloured bottoms can help minimize the appearance of your hips, while layered tops or jackets that end above the hip can streamline your silhouette and add dimension to your outfit.

Apple body shape

With apple bodies, we want to focus on drawing attention away from the midsection. Wrap dresses or tops with empire waistlines can help create the illusion of a waist. These styles flow over the midsection without clinging, providing comfort and a flattering look.

Choose fabrics that drape well and offer movement, such as flowy tunics or A-line dresses. V-neck tops can elongate the torso, while A-line skirts can add balance to your lower body. Structured outerwear like tailored jackets or blazers can add definition to your shape without emphasizing the midsection. Monochromatic outfits, where the top and bottom are of the same color, can create a streamlined appearance. Layering with lightweight scarves or accessories can draw attention upward and add interest to your look.

Rectangle Body Shape

To enhance this silhouette, focus on creating the illusion of curves and adding dimension to your figure. Opt for tops with details that add volume to your upper body, such as peplum tops, ruffled blouses, or blazers with shoulder pads.

Cinching your waist with belts or choosing high-waisted pants and skirts can help create a definition. Layering with jackets or cardigans that end at the hip or higher can add dimension and shape to your figure. Experiment with asymmetrical necklines and hemlines to break up the straight lines of your body and add visual interest. Patterns and textures like horizontal stripes or bold prints can also create the illusion of curves and add depth to your outfits.

Inverted Triangle Body Shape

To balance this shape, you want to create more volume and emphasis on your lower body. Choose bottoms that add volume, such as wide-leg pants, A-line skirts, or bottoms with details like pockets or patterns.

Emphasize your hips with skirts that flare out or have pleats, which can create a more balanced silhouette. Dark-colored tops can help minimize the appearance of broad shoulders, while V-neck or wrap tops can soften their appearance. Avoid tops with shoulder padding or too much structure at the shoulders. Instead, opt for tops with details around the neckline or sleeves to draw attention upward. Layering with long cardigans or jackets that end at the hips can help create a more balanced look between your upper and lower bodies.

Embracing your shape

These styling tips are designed to help you embrace and enhance your natural body shape, ensuring you look and feel your best every day. Whether you’re highlighting your curves, creating more balanced proportions, or adding dimension to your figure, confidence in your style choices is key to rocking any outfit.
