The prognosis of peritonitis depends on the cause of the infection and on how quickly the doctor makes the diagnosis and begins treatment. Usually, antibiotic therapy and surgery are able to get the infection in check. The progression will depend on the cause of the infection and how far it has progressed before treatment started.
