How To Care For Dental Crowns With The Right Diet

2 Mins read

Crowns can be used to treat a long list of oral health issues and cosmetic problems, including chips, cracks, severe stains, and misaligned teeth. If you are going to have one or more crowns installed, then it might be time to take a fresh look at which foods you should and shouldn’t eat in the coming years.

How To Care For Dental Crowns With The Right Diet

Avoid Sticky or Chewy Sweets

There are a few different reasons why you need to avoid chewy or sticky sweets if you have any crowns or veneers in your mouth. In addition to potentially damaging the crowns, the sugar is also going to be very bad for the surrounding natural teeth. The occasional sweet treat probably won’t do too much damage, but you should avoid any snacks that are particularly crunchy or chewy.

Enjoy Your Vegetables

Filling up on nutrient-dense vegetables will be one of the best things that you can do for your crowns as well as your oral health, but you need to be careful about which types of vegetables you eat. As a general rule, patients who have dental crowns should avoid crunchy vegetables, such as raw carrots, celery, and radishes. That being said, those vegetables will be perfectly fine once they are cooked.

Steer Clear of Hard Foods

Many people bite into extremely hard foods without realizing just how much damage they are doing to their teeth. Some of the worst offenders include nuts, granola, hard candy, and ice. Whenever you bite into any of those foods, you could crack or completely dislodge one of your crowns. You must also avoid biting on your nails and opening packages with your teeth.

Fill Your Plate With Protein-Rich Foods

Eating plenty of protein-rich foods throughout the day is going to have a huge impact on your teeth and gums. Without protein, it will be nearly impossible for your body to repair or replace muscles, fat, and other forms of soft tissue. Protein also contains an important substance known as phosphorous, and that particular chemical is going to strengthen your teeth as well as your jaws.

If you feel like you might have damaged or dislodged one of your crowns, then you must immediately contact your dentist and schedule an emergency appointment. Your crowns are going to protect your teeth from a variety of serious issues, and that is why they must be replaced as quickly as possible once they are damaged.
