1. Ixtoc 1
On the top of our list is the Ixtoc 1 not because of the amount of the oil spilled but because of the damage it made. For ten months, the Ixtoc 1 continuously leaked and burned. To alleviate the situation, mud, iron, lead balls, and steel were dropped in the shaft. A total of 140 million galloons of oil were spilled and millions of dollars were lost because of the accident.
Indeed, human civilization was greatly improved because of oil as a source of energy. But with that power come great responsibility. Safety and prudence should be observed to avoid another oil spill.
