The incident of shark attacks took place along the coast of New Jersey between the first fortnight of July 1916, when at least four people were mauled and killed by the sharks. The resort towns had to put up steel nets to ensure the safety of the beach-goers. The movie had a lasting impact and for quite some time after its release, the beaches had less than usual attendance.
