6. Insulin
The discovery of the hormone insulin by Frederick Banting and his colleagues changed the lives of those inflicted by diabetes. The absence of insulin from the body inhibits the intake of glucose and the use of fat as a source of energy. The discovery of insulin overcame this problem giving the diabetics a sense of relief and a surety against a slow and certain death. Those having diabetes now take insulin by way of injections, which helps keep the blood sugar levels balanced.
