5. HIV Treatment as Prevention
The discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV led to the identification of virus that causes AIDS. This discovery led to the detailed study of how the virus could be controlled. The discovery of the antiretroviral drugs has led to the successful treatment of HIV bringing down the levels of the virus and keeping the HIV transmission risks to a minimum. The ARV drugs that till now were used to treat HIV infections are being used to protect those who are HIV free from acquiring the infection. Studies have revealed that the ARV drugs could help control the AIDS epidemic in heterosexual couples.
