Surgery before the discovery of anesthetics was painful as there was no way to control the pain a surgical procedure could induce. The discovery of anesthetics has not only put an end to the pain associated with surgery but it has also enabled the surgeons to perform intricate and complex surgeries without the fear of making the patient undergo shock that was a complication due to unbearable pain.
