9. The Exact Length of Marathon


The marathon prior to the 1908 games was always an approximate distance. However, in 1908 the British royal family requested the start of the marathon from the Windsor Castle to enable the royal children to witness it. The distance between the Windsor Castle and the Olympic Stadium was 26 miles and 385 yards. This became the standard length of the marathon since the 1924 Olympic Games.
