Initially, the Chinese government tried to tone down the actual damage of the earthquake reporting that there were 240,000 people died from the catastrophe but unofficial reports says that death toll reached as high as 655,000. The year was made worse because of the political turmoil that year and the deaths of Prime Minister Zhou Enlai and communist leader, Mao tse-tung.
