Tips For Exterior Home Maintenance

Tips For Exterior Home Maintenance

Your home can take a beating during winter. Now that the weather is warmer, it’s time to get out of the house and start spring cleaning. Here are a few tips for your exterior home maintenance.

Check and Clean the Roof.

If you are not afraid of heights, climb a ladder and inspect your roof. Check for warped or missing shingles, torn flashing, and cracked caulk around pipes. Inspect your vents, skylights, chimney, and other roof elements. Fix any leaky spots before it starts to rain. Water seeping through the roof can cause expensive damage to your home.

If you need a ladder or high-power washers, contact an equipment rental company.

Check and Clean the Gutters and Downspouts.

Bad drainage can totally ruin your home. To prevent mold, mildew, and termite infestations, make sure water is able to run off your property. Check the eaves and gutters and remove any debris. Downspouts should drain water at least five feet away from the foundation wall.

Check for Cracks.

All concrete slabs on your property must be checked for cracks. These include driveways, garden pathways, sidewalks, and basketball courts, among others. Repair cracks with silicone caulk or concrete crack filler.

Inspect the caulking around your windows. Scrape and replace if cracks are present.

Check the Foundation and Siding.

Walk around your property and look for cracks in the foundation wall, siding, bricks, and stucco layer. Give your vinyl siding a power wash at least once a year. Homes with wood siding should be treated every three to four years to ward off the elements.

Crawl spaces often have vents on the foundation wall to help with air circulation. Clean the vents by hand or vacuum so they are able to remove excess moisture in the area. Repair damaged screens to keep critters away.

Trim Overgrowth.

Make sure trees and shrubs are always at a safe distance from your home. Trim excess leaves and branches to keep squirrels and raccoons at bay.

To make the job easier, consider renting specialized landscaping trimmers and cutters from an equipment rental company.

Look for Paint Damage.

The paint job on your window sills, decks, and fences can crack during winter. Protect your home exterior from the elements with a quick touch-up.

Check All Wooden Panels.

Wood adds to curb appeal, but not if it’s tattered or rotting. Reseal and stain woodwork on your patio every few years to maintain their charm.
