Lifestyle Habits to Make For Keeping Your Teeth Strong As You Age

2 Mins read

You only get one set of teeth as an adult, so it’s important to try to do everything that you can to take care of them and keep them strong. Brushing every day is recommended, and you’ve probably been doing this since you were young. However, there are other actions to take as well as foods and beverages that you can eat along with a few products that you want to keep on hand for healthy teeth.

Lifestyle Habits to Make For Keeping Your Teeth Strong As You Age

Dental Visits

Keep regular dental appointments for every six months. Even if you don’t think that something is wrong, your dentist can clean and examine your teeth to help keep them healthy. If there are issues that are seen, then a treatment plan can be put in place before the issue develops into something that could require a crown, a root canal, or implants.

Brushing and Flossing

Although brushing twice a day is good for your teeth, you also need to floss at least once a day. You should also use a mouth rinse that has fluoride in it to help strengthen your enamel and rinse away particles that brushing can’t reach. When brushing, you need to try to angle the brush so that it’s near the gum line as this is where a good bit of the food that you eat settles.

Chew Gum

If you can chew gum after a meal or two or at least a few times a week, then the saliva production in your mouth can stay elevated. This means that your mouth is going to naturally stay cleaned. The gum should be sugar-free so that there isn’t a lot of sugar that builds on your teeth while chewing.

Protection

If you’re active or you play sports, consider getting a mouth guard. This device can help protect your teeth from significant injuries while you’re playing a contact sport or while you’re out and about playing with your family. Your dentist can fit you for a mouth guard if you want one that’s snug, or you can get a basic guard at most pharmacies and retail stores that you can easily mold using hot water if you just want general protection for your teeth.

Your teeth rely on you to keep them strong as you get older. By visiting the dentist, you can stay on top of any issues that develop. If you take the time to protect your teeth, then they will likely serve you well throughout your life.
