Color blindness is much more common among males as opposed to females. Color blindness is a trait that is carried within the X sex chromosone. There is no cure for color blindness and many people who have the disorder usually diagnose it themselves.
There are actually three types of color blindness defficency. The three types of color blindness include Protan, Deutan and Tritan. Those who suffer with Protan color blindness actually have defective or defficient wavelength cones. A person with Protan color blindness only has two wavelength cones which are functional at any given time.
Deutan color blindness refers to a red green color blindness. Therefore, anyone with Deutan color defficency has difficulty distinguishing between the colors red, green and sometimes dark blue. This type of color blindness is found in about 6% of the male population.
Tritan color blindness can be explained best by saying that anyone who has this defect has a complete absence of the S-cone. Therefore, any bright color can easily be confused for another. A person with an S-cone defficiency actually has a hard time distinguising one color from another. This kind of color blindness can be quite severe and usually the person learns to adjust.
There are tests geared toward determining color blindness. A color blindness test will determine the severity of the problem in most cases. The fact that there is no cure for color blindness there is some help that can improve ones color vision.
Colored lenses or glasses can help a person to determine specific colors more accuratly. Colored lenses will not correct the problem by any means but it can help a person a great deal.
Much more is known today about color blindness. Color blindness can be divided into four categories. Slightly, moderate, strong and absolute are the four categories of color blindness. Slightly of course refers to a very mild form of color blindness and absolute refers to the most severe or serious form of color blindness.
Color blindness can cause some serious problems. For example, when driving a car it may be difficult for the driver to determine the color of a traffic light. Therefore, it may be required to make the motor vehicle bureau aware of color blindness when testing for a drivers license.
In some more severe cases, a person may actually be turned down for a job due to color blindness. A job that requires close attention to color detail may be impossible for a color blind person to complete.
Color blindness is still present in the world. However, there are ways color blindness can be treated. Possibly one day there will be a cure for color blindness.
