7. Centralia in Pennsylvania, USA


A mine fire has been burning beneath Centralia since 1962. In 2002 the town’s ZIP codes were revoked and all the buildings condemned. However, a few residents have stayed there, in 2010 the town had a population of 12. There are high levels of carbon monoxide in the air and before the residents were moved out, a few experienced large sink holes opening up right in front of them.
