Where fashion meets art

Since founding the fashion label art point in 1993, designer Lena Kvadrat has been expending her creative efforts between her HQ in Moscow and her European base in Vienna. In 2001 Lena settled in the Austrian capital, releasing two collections internationally per year through art point.

The focus at the Vienna store is on manipulating the fine line where fashion and art meet; an abundantly creative combo, producing practical clothes that fit in with Lena’s ethos of underlining the cultural and social importance of fashion. As a result art point throws up some funky left-field numbers—two-sleeves and a shirt collar comprising a shawl for example—leading to her outfits and accessories to be described as 3-dimensional clothes.

Despite the avant-garde nature of the art point label, for Lena, “what’s important is that the clothes are wearable”, so don’t expect elaborate and difficult-to-pull-off designs so often seen flaunted on international catwalks. She makes this assertion on an appearance on Austrian Television wearing one of her own inventions—one moment it’s an all-black tulip skirt, and seconds later after a simple fold and a tug, it transforms into a short dress with a dash of bold red.
