Kunsthalle started out in the early 1990s, in what looked like a yellow and blue steel cargo container that had been plunked down right on the busiest intersection on Karlsplatz. Some ten years later, the Kunsthalle moved to a more permanent home in the heart of the Museumsquartier, where it now occupies a quieter space in the former imperial stables.
Kunsthalle features changing exhibitions and displays by international renowned contemporary artists such as Matthew Barney, Louis Bourgeois, Derek Jarman and Steve Mcqueen, and focuses on photography, video, film, installations and new media.
Not forgetting its former location, the gallery also continues to maintain an off-space for emerging artists on Karlsplatz. Called “Project Space", it’s a popular venue for emerging artists, art events and DJ-lineups.
