This buschenschank (wine tavern) embodies Viennese charm that could bring an unsuspecting first-timer to swoon. It is a heady experience to sip the Huber family’s wines amidst shrubs of oleander and lavender, beneath the shade of grapevine trellises or in the shadow of hanging flower baskets.
The wait staff clad in traditional Austrian clothes are also not short on the charm. The buffet ranks a few notches above the usual heurige fare. The Hubers family run three other heurige and a hotel, meaning that quality food is produced fresh and daily (sadly, the same could not be said for many other traditional heurige.) This includes homemade pastries, marinated vegetables with fresh herbs and absolutely the best homemade Liptauerkäse (a paprika soft cheese spread) in town—buttery, assuredly spicy and heavy on the onions.
Tourists are rare on most nights. Perhaps it’s the far-away distance from Grinzing, which transforms the establishment into a living room for its regulars pool of Ottakring locals. They make up the majority of guests and seem to come here every day; the infatuation is understandable.
