This private institution presents a vast array of more than 1000 original documents that capture the historically significant film The Third Man, which was shot in Vienna in 1948. On view is a collection that illustrates the international success of the movie as well as daily life in post-war Vienna. The most precious item is the original zither (the 40-string instrument originating in the Alps) used by Anton Karas when recording musical score in London.
Movie posters and all kinds of curiosities on the film are shown as well as Anton Karas’ private photo gallery from his winery and the original cap of “Little Hansel.”
Listen to The Beatles or any of the 400 covers of “The Harry Lime Theme” and leaf through one of the 80 international editions of The Third Man!
The museum is not only a tribute to the winner of the first prize at Cannes in 1949, but proves to be in invaluable history lesson on a divided city and its attempts at reconstruction after WWII.
