The aquarium on top of the Flakturm (anti-aircraft tower from WWII) by Gumpendorferstrasse is a unique location to observe the behavior of the frutti di mare in their near-natural habitat. Other attractions in this “Aqua Terra Zoo” are piranhas, crocodiles and the free flying birds in the new tropical house but the undisputed stars of the show are the sharks.

The new café on the fourth floor faces the 300,000-liter shark pool. The rooftop of “Haus des Meeres” is now accessible to the public, offering panoramic views of Vienna. “Smashed to Pieces in the Still of the Night” is emblazoned on the Flakturm in English and German, the work of American artist Lawrence Wiener created for the Wiener Festwochen in 1991.
