The cemetery enjoys great popularity, especially since it was the film location for the 1995 film Before Sunrise, starring Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke as young travelers who consume their chance meeting here.

Strictly speaking, Friedhof der Namenlosen (“cemetery of the unnamed”) is a matter of two cemeteries, only one of which is recognized as such. In 1840 the first burial of an unknown drowned corpse from the Danube took place. In the past a whirlpool regularly washed anonymous bodies on land here. A second cemetery was established in 1900.
