Hanging upside-down off of Austria’s tallest freestanding building definitely scores props for any Spiderman references—and the most unique view of the Vienna. The 250-meter tall Donauturm (Danube Tower) was built for the Vienna International Garden Fair in 1968 and redefined “city sightseeing” with its bungee jumping platform 152 meters high.
The ramp is eight meters long, which means the jumper can reflect, for a few terrified seconds, whether or not they really want to make the leap. The view of the city stretches as far as 80km. Speeds can reach 90km per hour in the fall. Yes, that’s much faster than most speeding limits around the world.
Naturally, a quick fall down also means a quick ride up—fancy elevators bring you to the observation terrace in a mere 35 seconds. Otherwise, stair-running competition up those 776 steps takes place every year in November.
For those who prefer their adrenaline while sitting down, the vistas from the cafe (160 meters) and restaurant (170 meters), each of which turns at variable speeds, taking 26 to 52 minutes for one complete rotation. The cafe serves a lavish Viennese brunch on weekends complete with a strudel smorgasbord. But the highlight of tower-top dining are the regular Full Moon Night parties with cocktails, buffet dinner, lunar horoscopes and raffling off a piece of the moon. But save the consumption post-bunjee jump, not the other way around.
